Presentation of money raised from 2017 raffle by Gavin Payne to Geoff Frost from Yass Can assist

           Dear John,
Thank you for you letter, and the appreciation certificate from Can Assist, much appreciated.
A grand total from the Apex Christmas raffle was certainly a pleasing result, and was a combined effort. Your board stared the ball rolling with your generous donation, ans was only too pleased to give a little time. The general public were very generous in buying the tickets, and many folk said how happy they were to see the Apex Chrsitmas stocking back on show after so many years off, they missed it.
I am very lucky to have such a beautiful unit, and sure appreciate everything that the boys do to keep us warm, safe and happy.
may the year ahead be very special for you,
Sincerely , Jess keith

Having moved into the Yass Apex Village seven-and-a-half years ago, she has found her home away from home and a new family to boot.

“When my husband passed away, I found that taking care of a house on my own and making sure everything was done was impossible,” she said.

“When this place became vacant I packed up my things and started my new life.

“It’s really the best thing I’ve ever done, and I suspect they will cart me out in a box.”

The Yass Apex Village is a not-for-profit community organisation that provides 40 self-contained units, giving permanent accommodation for aged persons.

The village, which is located in the area bordered by Meehan, Rossi and Church Streets, couldn’t be in a more prime location.

“Town is so close,” she said. “But it’s more than that, it’s the sense of family … We look after one another here. I always feel safe and secure.”

The group started in 1964 when Miss Mary Frances Callaghan died, leaving her estate to the community to provide accommodation for aged persons.

“Who would have thought the project would have grown to what it is today back when it started?” board secretary, John Heggart said.

The success could only be attributed to the generosity of the Yass people, Legacy who proved a big financial supporter and many other community groups.

The homes were the first in Yass to provide accommodation for the aged members in the community.

“It was designed for people that were living off a pension and really didn’t have many options for housing,” he said.

While the board and trustees provide the maintenance and safe housing, it is the residents that create the community.

“The residents do 90 per cent of the landscaping work, and happily.”

“We’ve been fortunate over the years in that we have had some top gardeners living in the units. This has saved us a fortune over the years and allowed us to spend money on other improvements.”

The accommodation is targeted at people over 60 and the village currently has a number of units ready to be occupied.

A local woman with a heart of gold left $9750.00 in her will to be used to build accommodation for the elderly in Yass and district in 1967.

The Yass APEX Club was offered the proposal as a service scheme and enthusiastically went about trying to make Mary Callaghan's dream a reality.

Through the years people have donated their time and money to the cause. Such was the community support for the project that Leo Demery and Rita Smith both bequeathed their estates to Yass Apex Club.

The penultimate stage (6) was completed in October 1991 and the final stage (7) began in 2005. It cost $1.500.000 in total including $200.000 worth of earth-works before construction could begin.

The new tenants donated $450.000 to help build the units and it obviously wouldn't have happened without that contribution.

But on Saturday April 12, Mara Apps, Norm Napper. Bemie Crowe and Alfred McCarthy will officially open the Ray Apps Memorial Units, signifying the realisation of a vision set in motion more than 50 years ago.
